At the time, it was more important to be together, and because of the economic situation, we couldn't afford anything else. Emma's parents and my parents knew that we were going to get married, and they were very happy about it. My mother and father were our best man and best woman. We had no large ceremony or give-away. Now that I am a little bit better off financially, I kind of wish that we could relive those days because I would have done anything for Emma. When we first got married, we moved into this apartment in Chimneytown, which is now Good Samaritan Village.
When I arrived, Colonel Getman was the company commander. When he looked at my records and found out I'd been in Korea and had a cook MOS since coming to Camp Aturbury, he was happy. He asked me if I could take + A Second Gunner + 43 charge of the kitchen. " I could cook a complete meal for breakfast, dinner, and supper and got to the point where I was pretty good at it.
